Feathered Friend

weeks high in a tree
you spent waiting to use your wings
and sharp talons

I would see this bird high in a large tree for weeks during the spring on my walks along the river. When one day it actually took flight, diving into the river with those extremely sharp talons. I don't think it caught anything, but it was a joy to see it take flight and survive (I saw it again after that), but it's been months and I haven't seen it. At first I thought it was an eagle or hawk, but upon further investigation I think this is an Osprey Fledgling.

This is in gracious response to One Deep Breath. This week's topic is "Feathered Friends".

i hope it has survived and is hunting happily somewhere not far away.

Nice. I wouldn't want to have its talons catch in my hair.

This was really striking. I loved the contrast between the feathery wings and fierce talons.

there's a slight hint of menace in your haiku, specially if you're a fish! I'd say osprey too.

Very good the way you reduced the memory down to its bare essentials and conveyed everything about this powerful creature.

Yes, it's an osprey. You can tell by the crest but also in flight, their wings are crooked in the middle.

Looking for fish. :)

I love the stillness before the Pounce, the waiting before Flight.

I love the image of a young bird eager to grow up and fly and hunt. Nicely done!

I love the fierce focus in its eyes and its ruffled neck feathers. Wonderful picture! And your haiku is beautiful -- I love how you capture the time waiting until it can fly to hunt. Perfect!

Great photo - and your haiku captures that feeling anticipation for going out after prey!

Nice photo and the words surely describe that 'as soon as I grow up' phase.

My father-in-law lives on Cape Cod where they protect the osprey. There are high poles with platforms put in the marshes and bogs to lure them to nest there...and they do, gratefully, I believe. The population has soared with the bird lover's efforts!
Wonderful haiku my friend.

What a beautiful bird, and your words give us a glimpse that makes me want to know more.

This makes sense to me. I cant imagine how exciting / frustrating it must be knowing that soon you will be able to fly, but not quite yet!

I've so enjoyed hearing all your comments relating to this magnificent bird. I think we can all learn from this, to be ready to fly when it's time, not to give up or move too hastily.

Peace.

Sometimes when the weather is rainy, it is like if the colour disapeared
Like if there was a colour thief

Here, the sky is so grey and then..? The feather are showing refined colours which say that this photograph is not black and white...

Cergie- hello again ;) The sky really was this grey, and it's like this often in the winter/spring here in the Seattle area. Today, the sky is very blue :p

We don't realise sometimes how long it takes to learn to fly

Nice photo. Love the feel of the "and sharp talons." Really leaves me kind of taking in my breath in surprise.
